Best Personal Development Books For New Entrepreneurs

When you’re making a big life change, like starting your own business, there is one thing that you need that all too often gets overlooked.

Personal Development.

I believe it’s absolutely fundamental to being successful.

You need to work on making sure your mindset, thoughts and self-belief are on point and you have tools and techniques that are going to keep driving you forward and stop you from giving up in the inevitable sticky moments.

Your mindset needs to be in a positive place, looking for solutions not issues, opportunities not obstacles, positives not negatives.

The journey to achieving anything big is going to throw some serious mindset gremlins at you, your brain will work directly against you at times.

Immersing yourself in personal development books is a great way of keeping yourself on track.and growing at the same time!

I read a book per week and here are a few of my favourites that have helped me along the way.

Mel Robbins – 5 second rule

This book changed my life.  For all those moments where you’re procrastinating or struggling to get yourself to just DO the things you know you should you need Mel’s 5 second rule.  This isn’t a business book per se.  I used it to get me into a gym routine for the first time in 33 years BUT the principal absolutely applies to all areas of life.  If you’ve got a full time job and you’re trying to get your side hustle off the ground the procrastination monster is a huge issue.  It’s all too easy to sit in front of Netflix or scrolling social media instead of doing all the things that can move you forward.  READ THIS!

Gay Hendricks – The Big Leap

Do you struggle with ‘upper limit problems’ and constantly feel outside your ‘zone of genius’?  This book is for you. Gay Hendricks explains his principles behind your upper limit problem.  How we self sabotage when good things happen or we achieve success beyond the levels we’re used to. The key takeaways for me was about sticking in your zone of genius. If there’s anything i’m doing in my zone of competence or incompetence I look at outsourcing thanks to this book and yes I spend more money but I save myself time and I can MAKE more money than I would spend in that time…now that’s genius!

Jen Sincero – You are a badass

How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. Essentially it’s no nonsense advice on how to actually change your life. If you’re constantly doubting yourself and your own greatness it’s going to feel like an uphill struggle all the way. This book helps you stop that cycle of self sabotage and Jen Sincero is pretty funny too…win win!

Simon Sinek – Start with why

When you’re really clear on your ‘Why’ in your business it can really propel you forward.  It makes your message stronger but it also keeps you moving in the difficult times.  Connecting to ‘why’ you’re doing what you’re doing puts that fire in your belly to push on.  ‘People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it’.

Steven Pressfield – The War Of Art

This book is primarily written for writers but my goodness it’s applicable to any entrepreneur or creative.  Resistance is something that rears it’s ugly head and we will have to deal with.  Resistance is that ‘fear’ activation in your head that turns into a little niggly voice telling you you can’t do things, slow down, procrastinate, stay safe.  When you understand this and can recognise it in yourself it’s honestly SO much easier to push through.  Now I know when it’s coming up and I know it means that i’m about to push through my comfort zone and achieve something great.  I think every single entrepreneur or soon to be entrepreneur NEEDS this book in their lives.

I have hundreds of other books hiding up my sleeve but these are a few of my favourites that have helped me along the way. These are plenty to be getting on with for now.
