What does a coach actually do…and what you should ask before you work with one?

Thinking about hiring a coach? ‘Coaches’ are a dime a dozen in the online space these days, it’s a booming industry, and for good reason, it’s powerful stuff!

BUT there is currently a lot of confusion about what a coach actually is and what they do.

There are a few things that are important to be aware of when deciding the if’s, the what’s and the who’s in the coaching space to make sure you’re doing the right thing for YOU.

ICF definition of Coaching:

The ICF definition of coaching is ‘partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.’

So…What is coaching and what does a coach do?

Coaching is a non-judgmental, open, collaborative and confidential space between a coach and their client.  Sessions focus on the client’s own thoughts, challenges, outcomes and goals and provides accountability for the client.

It’s a hugely powerful way of exploring our values, our personal belief systems, our behaviours and ‘stories’ we have believed to be true and explore how they may potentially be holding us back…and how we can change them in order to move forward.

Coaching creates self exploration and self discovery which can, in turn give us much greater self awareness, and enable us to examine and reshape many areas of our lives.  Through working with a coach you will get to know yourself better than you ever have before, so enjoy the ride!

Proven Techniques

By using techniques based on core psychological principles, asking key questions at key points, by listening for repeating language and underlying beliefs and allowing space for reflection coaches give their clients the awareness and the tools they need to move forward towards their dreams and goals.

It’s giving you the power to help yourself, coaching is non advisory so your coach should never TELL you what to do, but they will work WITH you to find the best way forward for YOU.

The bottom line is if someone TELLS you what to do, even if you think it’s a good idea, you’re just never as ‘bought in’ as you are when you come up with the answer yourself.

It really puts a fire in your belly to achieve and gets ou out of your own head and into action.

What do you get from working with a coach?

Coaching gives the client back their power over their own life and thoughts.

You know ALL the answers to the things that are holding you back, you just need someone to hold up that mirror for you and help you unlock it so you can move forward!

Coaching challenges your automatic thoughts and habits that you don’t even think to challenge, those stories you’ve had since childhood that if you continued to listen to you’d stay stuck forever and helps you shift them.

It challenges your beliefs and if they’re really true, it’s incredibly powerful and leads you to set bigger goals, take bigger action and actually believe that it’s all possible when previously you didn’t.

It helps you achieve MORE, helps you GROW and makes it easier for you to do so.

Coaching provides momentum, structure, support, accountability, objectivity…your coach is invested in your success, they have a toolkit that you don’t and they can really speed up you achieving your goals.

It gives you direction, focus, increases productivity, resilience, decreases procrastination, shifts your thinking, allows you to gain perspective, purpose, I could go on…

A coach will focus on what YOU want to focus on, it’s all led by the client in a collaborative way, they help get you to where you want to be.

Why would I hire a coach?

There are SO many reasons someone might hire a coach!  The possibilities are endless.

It could be that you’re at a career crossroads where you know you’re unhappy and completely unfulfilled and feeling stuck but have no idea what to do to change your situation.

You could have a huge goal you’ve always wanted to achieve like start a business or write a book but you’re full of excuses and know you are the one standing in your way.

You may want to go for a big promotion but need the confidence to believe you can get it.

You may need help building confidence in general, help to stop procrastinating, help to push through the fears and negative thoughts you know are holding you back or you want to just be the best person you can be.

Working with a coach is a way to get what you want out of life and start really living it…in a fraction of the time with the accountability and support needed to get you there!

Coaching is like holding a mirror up to the client.  If I had a penny for every time a client said to me ‘Oh my goodness you’re right’ when all I’ve done is ask a question in the right way, at the right time to open up their OWN thinking, that’s the magic!

Essentially, If there’s a gap between where you’re at now and where you want to be, then a coach will help you fill it!

What a coach is not:

A therapist or counsellor – Therapists focus on your problems and often look to the past while a coach would focus on the solutions and how to move you forward to get you where you want to be.

A mentor (unless they use a combination of coaching and mentoring, which many do, just make sure they clarify with you how their style works!)

An expert in what you do, they don’t have to be!  They see all those walls and blind spots you’ve put up that you can’t see past, they have the helicopter view of what’s going on for you.(N.B – Unless you’re looking specifically for a business coach to help you build your business, which are actually usually mentors…in that case make sure they’re at where you want to be!! For the purposes of this i’m not talking about business coaches)

Questions to ask before you hire one:

What Qualifications do they have?  – Coaching is currently an unregulated industry (you don’t NEED a qualification to call yourself a coach) but the ICF is a global organisation setting the highest of standards for the industry and stands by its globally recognised core competencies, ethics and guidelines so if qualifications and training are important to you then you want to make sure that your coach has been accredited through an ICF accredited course.

What experience do you have, why did you get into coaching? – How long have they been a coach?  There are AMAZING coaches who are just starting out (AND who don’t have official qualifications) so do bear that in mind but asking this will help you make the right decision for you and your needs, there are pro’s and cons to both sides of the coin!Just make sure you do your due diligence before parting with your cash!

What sort of results do you get? – They can’t get too specific here due to confidentiality but they can tell you about their niche, the kind of problems they see and what they feel well equipped to help with.

You get out what you put in!

With coaching you get out what you put in, a coach can’t do the work for you…they can show you the way but it’s up to you to make the changes….but that’s where the accountability of having a regular session comes in and all the magic can happen!

You should leave your session feeling uplifted and motivated to take action.

You’re the expert of your own life and you have all the answers already, coaching simply helps you find them so you can finally fulfill your full potential and live your best life possible!
