What to do when you feel like giving up on your dream business

Have you got a case of the business blues?

Feeling like giving up?

That feeling when you’ve got to a certain point and feel like you’re not seeing the results you want, getting frustrated, working all hours and juggling all the plates with little return and feel totally discouraged, overwhelmed and under motivated?

I hear you!

Starting a business is TOUGH.  Don’t let the 6 figures in 6 months rubbish fool you.  It takes a huge amount of work and time and when you’re starting out you feel like you’re talking to crickets half the time.

You feel like time, money and algorithms are all working against you, you miss your evenings and weekends and have forgotten what your friends and loved ones look like.

Usually we start to feel this way just before things are about to get good so here are a few ways to work out if quitting is the right thing for you OR if you need to stay strong and make a few tweaks!

Here’s what to do when you’re feeling lost, lonely and ready to give up….so you make sure you don’t!

Go back to your why

When you feel like giving up on something you’ve spent so much time and energy creating it’s important to ask yourself this question.  Why did you start your business? Really, why?  Ask yourself and keep going until you hit the REAL reason.  Often it’s hidden under layers and layers of reasons but when you can connect to the ACTUAL reason you do what you do it gives you your passion back and that fire back in your belly.

Connect with like minded people who are going through the same things.

Sometimes entrepreneurship can feel REALLY lonely, which makes it less enjoyable.  I’ve never felt that way because I intentionally created connections with like minded people from the start.  Find some facebook groups where you can interact(You can join mine right here), get an accountability buddy, join a mastermind or hire a coach.  Whatever you need to do to make sure you have a place to go when you’re having a wobble and feel like giving up and equally to share your successes so you don’t feel so in it on your own.

What is it that is actually making you feel like giving up?

Too much work?  What can you outsource?

Imposter syndrome? List all the reasons you ARE qualified to do what you do.

Drill down to what is REALLY making you feel that way and work on that!

Reframe your thinking!

Check your thoughts! If you’re looking at things to not be going well that’s exactly what you’ll get.  What are your thoughts telling you? Do you need to shift them back to the positive again? You really do need to have a positive foundation in your mindset for this game.  If you don’t your brain will actively work against you…so how can you think differently and find your positive pants again?

Do you actually just need a break to look after yourself?

When is the last time you had a little Self care?  Book some in and see how you feel after.

Is it fear holding you back?

Are you scared of failing?  Of success? If you’re struggling with fear have a read of this.

Have you lost faith in yourself?

It’s so important to keep a track of where you’re going and also where you’ve been.  Recognise how far you’ve already come and keep track with your journal so in times of feeling like nothing is moving, you have that reminder!Remember when you’re in a job you have someone to tell you if you’re doing great…or not so great.  You don’t have that in our own business so you need to wear all the hats and keep acknowledging the small wins and keep creating goals. Stop and smell the roses!

Are you comparing your 10th step to someone else’s 10,000th?

Remember that in the online space you tend to only see the ‘successes’.  People often don’t share their struggles and setbacks and you never know 100% of the story.  There is no such thing as an overnight success and we all have our own journeys and own set of unique circumstances so concentrate on what your doing, and on your own timeline.

Get a coach or mentor

There comes a point where you need to stop trying to do everything on your own. You can learn from an expert, a coach or a mentor who knows how to get through what you need to get through.  It will keep you headed in the right direction, help you set the right goals, give you accountability, a place to talk through all the wobbles and help stop you getting sidetracked or discouraged.  They can teach you the tools, strategies and shortcuts you need to stay on track.

Remember that usually when we feel like this we are on the verge of amazing.  What will your life look like when you succeed…marinate in that vision for a while…is it worth it for you?

How would you feel in a years time if you DID quit?

If the answer is relief then that tells you everything you need to know.  If the answer is anything but…keep going!
